1. Introduction to glass material
No one material can meet all experimental requirements. The use of glass or plastic depends on the application and design, taking into account the specific properties of the material and, of course, cost.
2. General properties of glass
The main material of glass is silica sand (SiO2), boric acid (H3BO3) or borax (Na2B4O7 10H2O), lime (CaO), glass chips (cullet), phosphoric acid (P2O5), alkali (Ha2O, provided by NaNO3, Na2B4O7, etc.) and other raw materials containing oxides such as potassium, magnesium, zinc, aluminum, etc.
Glass products have good chemical resistance to water, salt solutions, acids, alkalis and organic solvents. From this point of view, they exceed most plastic products. Only hydrofluoric acid and, at elevated temperatures, strong bases or concentrated phosphoric acid will attack glass. Another characteristic of glassware is its shape stability, even under elevated temperatures, and its high degree of transparency.
